Carbon Measurement UI/UX best practices

Language used

  • Educating your users properly can have a greater impact than adding new features. Use simple language that helps users understand how their carbon footprint is calculated and what it represents.
  • Frame the wording as carbon "Insights" rather than "Tracking". This helps convey to users that this feature provides them with an additional, comprehensive view of their sustainability practices, rather than being seen as something enforced upon them.
  • To motivate users to take action, frame insights as "climate encouragement" rather than "climate blaming". Positive feedback is more effective in inspiring action than negative feedback. For example, avoid comparing a user's emissions to the equivalent of a tree being chopped down.

Feature design

  • Toggle on/off. Implement a feature toggle that enables users to turn emissions insights on or off. While we have received positive feedback and adoption, not everyone may be interested in sustainability insights. Letting users choose empowers them with the feature rather than enforcing it.
  • Explain the calculation. Have easily locatable information screens that explain how the carbon footprint is calculated and what carbon insights mean. This helps users understand both the calculation and its limitations. We can help provide this content for you.
  • Use pie charts for reporting. From user testing, the best way to visualise reporting data from the Connect Insights endpoint is within pie charts. Use your own groups and categories to provide more personalised graphs that resonate with users.

Feedback collected for this guide

We have collected this guidance from three primary sources across our implementations:

  1. Direct user feedback from existing users of our services. Methods vary by customer and range from questionnaires to social media feedback.
  2. User testing with new users participating in trials.
  3. Customer calls and workshops providing direct feedback on the experience.
